It is natural to believe that wild horses "always" roamed western United States, but that is simply not the case. Horses were native North America until the end of the last ice age, 10-12,000 years ago and then became extinct.
It took the joint action of Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes to take horses to North America. In 1493, Christopher Columbus brought horses from Spain to the West Indies during his second voyage to the Americas. In 1519, Spanish conqueror Cortez brought horses to the continent, as the captain of the Spanish expedition party.
Horses came to America North through Mexico and Florida, as an instrument of the Spanish and used to great effect by Cortez in the defeat of the Aztec empire.
Many horses went crazy after the murder of his runners. Other horses escaped from the pens, and many more horses have been integrated into American Indian societies. Within a few decades, the horses had emigrated from Mexico and Florida, and entered the North American interior.
The History of American Horse Breeds
Almost all wild horses currently running in the ranges of the western United States came from the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, in a region defined by modern day Spain, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar.
The Organization for Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations suggests that there are 17 individual horse breeds can be defined as "Iberian horses". Three of the races hail from Portugal and the remaining 14 originated in Spain. Most of the Iberian horse breeds are considered baroque horses, consisting mostly of Andalusian horses, Arabian and Barb ancestry.
Many Native American tribes became master horse breeders, most importantly, the Comanche, the Shoshoni, and Nez Perce nations. A through selective breeding by Native American tribes, the first truly American horse breed was the Appaloosa.
The wild horses of Western States United are actually more accurate to refer to horses who have gone "wild", or horses that were once domesticated and now are wild. Just as there is large population of stray dogs near the large American cities, particularly near Miami, Florida, there is also a substantial population of wild horses in America.

In 1900 it is estimated there are about two million of free roaming horses in America. During the early twentieth century, the population of horses roaming free was severely diminished through a combination of factors, including the capture of horses for use in the army, and most disgustingly, by companies that killed the horses for food dog.
In the 1970s, the plight of wild horses in the United States had attracted the attention of the Federal Government USA. This newly focused attention eventually led to the adoption of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.
In recent years, is estimated by the Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management that are not as many as 29,000 wild horses and burros on BLM-managed lands in ten states West. The ten U.S. states Westerners who have wild horses Running Wild includes: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming.
It is estimated that more than half the population of wild horses live in Nevada and Montana and Oregon are the other states with significant wild number horse population. There are hundreds of head of wild horses roaming free in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.
Across the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, the Bureau of Land Management has responsibility for managing the number of wild horses and burros, to ensure that herds thrive on healthy rangelands healthy. The mandate of the BLM, which is responsible for managing the herd numbers of wild horses and burros that roam the American West.
The BLM Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program and Sale
Wild horses left to their own devices can literally double their population in just four years, provided that the drought and forest fires do not reduce their number naturally. The horses have no natural predators in the North American grasslands, so their numbers generally run without control, without the involvement of BLM.
The beauty of the 1971 Act is that, as sacrifices BLM horses and burros from the wild population, horses and burros available for adoption and sale through the BLM program to individuals and groups willing and able to provide human, long-term care for these beautiful animals.
